Brussels offers an efficient and modern transport network covering all major destinations in the city. Compared with other European capitals, public transport in Brussels is inexpensive and safe.
The Brussels Intermunicipal Transport Company (STIB/MIVB) operates the entire subway, bus and streetcar network for the Brussels Region between 5.30 a.m. and 00.30 am, depending on the destination. The centre is quite well served by the underground trams and subway. The other communes are served by networks of buses and trams and also the subway.
There are also night busses: every weekend 20 bus lines cross the Brussels-Capital Region until 3 a.m. Every Friday and Saturday night, from 0.20 a.m. until 3 a.m., a night network of 20 bus lines brings you home safely. Public transport also includes high-speed rail connections to the distant northern and southern suburbs of the city. There is no real reason to drive to work in Brussels.
Compared with other major European cities, the traffic in Brussels is rather free-flowing and one can avoid rush hour quite easily. Brussels has an urban road network of approximately 2000 km.
