Belgium: a business-friendly economy 27/01/12

While still having to tackle such issues as a complex tax regime, Belgium is rated highly by international observers as a business-friendly environment. Its open attitude towards foreign investment and trade, in addition to its status as host to many of Europe’s institutions, earn it high rankings in studies by the Economist Intelligence Unit (19 at world level) and the World Bank (25). According to a new report by Ernst & Young, Belgium continues to make inroads into reducing the cost and complexity of regulation. The country’s diversity is also one of its strengths, giving it one of the most multilingual and productive workforces in Europe. This, combined with a central geographic location and a reliable infrastructure, is encouraging companies to look to Belgium as a global or regional headquarters for operations. The government’s recent administrative reforms have cut the number of days to establish a business from 56 in 2004 to just four.
