Long recognised as a city of culture with an attraction disproportionate to its size, Brussels is now receiving endorsement in an unexpected way: more and more major foreign art dealers are moving into the city. New arrivals include Artcurial, the leading French auctioneer, as well as the galleries of Barbara Gladstone, Almine Rech, Flore de Brantes, Nathalie Obadia and Pierre Giraud. “Brussels is like Berlin in attracting young artists,” says Karen Renders, director of the ‘Art Brussels’ organisation, “but the key factor is the presence in Brussels of a community of art collectors with a real nose for new talent. This is not a transient phenomena, but a structural trend. Brussels is the new Berlin.”
